The Jaguar J-Pace will take on rivals such as the BMW X7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS

The manufacturer could be developing the Jaguar J-Pace, a large SUV that will duel with the BMW X7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS.

El Jaguar F-Pace The BMW 23.520 Series has become a huge success for the car manufacturer, as the company has managed to sell 14.752 units in Europe last year and another XNUMX in the United States. These numbers far exceed the sales of the Jaguar XE and the Jaguar XF, so it is not surprising that Jaguar is planning an assortment of new 'crossovers'.

While the company remains firm about its future plans, they recently invited the jury of the World Car Awards to “make the most of their premium models for 2020.” This included a look at the new replacement versions of the Jaguar XE and Jaguar F-Typeas well as the next Jaguar XJ electric.

The jury members were also able to glimpse several completely new models, including the Jaguar J-Pace. While the World Car Awards didn't say much about the vehicle, it is expected to become the feline brand's large SUV. Some sources rumour that it could go up against models like the new BMW X7 or Mercedes-Benz GLS. The crossover is expected to be developed in the new MLA platform of the company.

The platform will be launched in the Land Rover Defender 2020 and according to the manufacturer it will be adaptable to conventional hybrid, mild hybrid and plug-in propulsion systems. The architecture can also support fully electric vehicles, but it is unknown whether a J will be expected.the all-electric J-Pace.

Jaguar J-Pace, will this new SUV join the brand's range?

At the other end of the spectrum, the company is working on a small crossover that could adopt the moniker A-Pace o B-Pace. Little is known about this future model, but it is “considerably less expensive” and presumably slots below the E-Pace which starts at around €35.000. However, the crossover does not appear to have been given the green light yet.

Some reports have suggested that the possible hybrid system that could be included in the future Jaguar SUV would be composed of a six-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine which would drive the front wheels and an electric motor that would drive the rear axle. The fully electric driving mode would have a range of at least 80 kilometers.

Additionally, Jaguar could also be planning a more affordable version of the rumored SUV that could become the brand's flagship. This version would be powered by a four-cylinder engine, and if there is enough demand, they could also greenlight a fully electric variant.

In terms of size, the Jaguar J-Pace will be positioned above the Jaguar E Pace and the Jaguar F-Pace. It is said to be 4.9 metres long and have a boot capacity of 650 litres - roughly the same as the new Mercedes-Benz GLE CoupeInside, everything indicates that it will be equipped with OLED screens like the one used in the Jaguar XE restyling.

The elimination of the traditional mechanical connection to the rear wheels will allow for a smarter packaging for the battery pack. Interior space will also be improved, as there will be no transmission tunnel. However, rear headroom will be affected by the rumoured sloping roof, unlike the next-generation Range Rover, which will use the same architecture.
