7 Tips for Loading Your Luggage in the Car

Luggage distribution inside the vehicle is one of the aspects that receives the least attention but can bring us the most benefits. Today we will show you several tips to optimise it.

Luggage is a fundamental part of any trip. Placing it correctly can make the journey much more pleasant, comfortable and safe. However, few people take care of this aspect; whether out of haste or lack of knowledge, the rule usually applied is “if the boot closes, it’s fine“.

Incorrect luggage placement is not only uncomfortable, but it is also a problem for your own safety and that of those around you. It can cause problems ranging from poor visibility to instability caused by an unbalanced weight distribution.

Below we give you several tips so you can avoid this kind of situation:

1. Do not overload the vehicle: If you know the car is going to be very loaded, try to avoid it by leaving behind things you really don’t need to take. Overloading can lead to a serious problem of instability, failure of the electronic systems, distractions, visibility problems and a longer braking distance.

2. Check your tyre pressure: if you are going to load the car heavily, it is important to check the pressure recommended by the manufacturer for this situation. Most vehicles include a specific pressure for loaded conditions.

  1. Try to distribute the weight evenly: if you have space, especially in the boot, do not leave the load on a single side of the car; the vehicle should not weigh more on one side than the other. Imagine the car is a set of scales and your goal is for the weight not to be unbalanced on any side.

  1. Try not to carry loose objects: not only can your own cargo break, but you can also damage the cabin of your car. It may also cause distractions due to unexpected noises that could startle you.

5. Use airtight roof boxes: if you know your boot cannot hold the whole load and you will have to put the surplus on the rear seats, it is best to use a airtight box mounted on the roof of the vehicle. Although it may affect aerodynamics, it is still safer, as it will not affect your visibility and, in case of sudden braking, no object will be thrown against your head…

6. Secure the load with tie-down points: it is advisable to secure the load with ropes or anchor points to make sure it will not move during the journey and is completely secure.

7. Take extra care during the journey: as the car is more loaded, and even though you follow the manufacturer’s loading recommendations, it will be less stable and harder to drive. It is important that you adapt to these new circumstances and to the vehicle’s condition, always with caution and patience.
