A Skoda Fabia 1.9 TDI from 2000 with one million kilometres

I couldn’t say exactly why I’m drawn to stories of cars that cover thousands, hundreds of thousands or even millions of kilometres without flinching, still looking like they did on the first day, as long as they receive the proper care.
But in these times when cars seem built to last no more than 100,000 kilometres (some don’t even make it that far), we have had the most famous example of all: the American Irv Gordon’s Volvo P1800, which has already reached 5 million kilometres with just three engine changes. Or the 1990 Honda Accord, which two years ago reported having covered more than one and a half million kilometres. Now we present another example of meticulous care and high durability of the same car: a German Skoda Fabia with a diesel engine that has reached one million kilometres driven.

The Fabia in question is a 1.9 TDI from 2000. Its owner, German Peter Kirchhoff, meticulously planned this moment for a long time: arriving at the company’s museum in Mladá Boleslav with the car showing exactly 999,999 kilometres on its odometer.
Over these years, an official Skoda workshop has been in charge of the car’s maintenance, carried out with the greatest care. During the check ahead of the mandatory TÜV inspection in June, the vehicle was once again subjected to a complete examination, in which only the brake discs and pads were replaced. Afterwards, the Fabia passed the technical inspection without problems.
Its owner is waiting for the third generation of the Skoda Fabia to reach the market so he can buy another Fabia. But if the car he now owns allows it, he intends to achieve further distance records and then donate it to the Skoda museum. And it’s no wonder, since few cars ever become recognised by the brand itself for their mileage and the quality of their overall state of preservation.
