Alfa Romeo keeps its promise to launch nine new cars by 2021
The arrival of Alfa Romeo’s new vehicles has been delayed, but the brand still intends to launch nine new models over the next five years.
Despite the delay in the launch of the Italian brand’s new models, Alfa is keeping its promise, and over the next five years we will see the arrival of nine new models.
By 2021, the Italian brand intends to add to its range a saloon longer than the Giulia, an iconic large SUV based on the foundations of the Maserati Levante, a third SUV and a new sports car.
In an interview with Autocar, Alfa Romeo chief Reid Bigland states that they remain willing to take on their German rivals despite the delay in the launch of their new range.
“Our goal is to match the Germans, but our plan is not a two-year one. We are not going to reach our target that quickly. After all, they are present in every segment and their derivatives. Counting the new Stelvio (SUV), we will only have 50% market coverage. We need to choose the right strategy. We have only one chance to make the best possible car with each launch.”
The growing demand for SUV models across the industry is forcing the Italian brand to focus a large part of its efforts on this segment. For this reason, Alfa could soon have up to three SUVs in its arsenal. Even so, Bigland admits that “a few years ago, building an Alfa SUV would have been sacrilege.”
The first SUV will be the brand’s flagship. It will be a model of great importance for Alfa, since the fate of other models will depend on its success; its revenue would allow funding of future projects.
The Italian brand’s plans also include a new Giuletta, also offered in an estate version, and a new Brera arriving on the market in 2020 in coupé and convertible versions.
