Apple patents a car unlocking system based on facial recognition

Thanks to biometric technology, Apple has patented a system capable of unlocking your vehicle through facial recognition. Its use in vehicles has only just begun.

Every day that goes by, the tech giant Apple is becoming increasingly interested in the world of motoring, a relationship that goes far beyond its well-known Apple CarPlay system.

In fact, the company has a department working on the development of various technologies related to driving automation.

In fact, although in the nearer future we will not see the much-rumoured Apple autonomous vehicle, Apple has stated that it is working in this field.

Another example of Apple’s commitment to the automotive field lies in its latest patent acquisition. It concerns the “System and Method for Vehicle Authorisation”.

This system uses biometric technology, which collects information from our faces to allow us to unlock our vehicle and, in the future, who knows, many other interesting options.

For now the system is limited to opening cars, which will be very useful and convenient, but still, we will have to see how secure this system proves to be in the long term, once thieves inevitably try to adapt to it.

There are many details about this new Apple patent, however the possibility of using Face ID, already so iconic for the technology company, is left open. This implementation will also improve possibilities related to car sharing.

It will also allow the creation of user accounts, to achieve personalised journeys or individualised experiences well tailored to each type of person.

It is clear that Apple is growing ever more interested in the automotive sector, which translates into excellent news: being able to create, with the whole creative team and the resources of this giant, ways to turn cars more and more, whether we like it or not, into “computers on wheels”.
