Black line edition: the best excuse to buy an Audi A4 Avant

If you had in mind a saloon in the Audi A4 class, pay attention. The fact that Audi is offering the new Black line edition special edition for the A4 Avant is, on its own, a compelling reason to choose the estate.

Compared with the saloon, the Audi A4 Avant costs around 2,000 euros more, depending on the version. Not much for everything you get. To begin with, from the driver’s point of view there are no drawbacks. With the same length as the saloon, 4.73 metres, it parks and manoeuvres the same way, and it feels just as agile and precise on any type of road. And with the same engine, the small difference that may exist in performance or consumption – due to the greater weight of the Avant body – is not something to worry about.

Why not an A4 Avant?

Aesthetics aside, the real advantages come when using the boot. Compared with the A4 saloon, the Avant offers 25 litres more boot capacity, with the practicality of an electrically operated tailgate that leaves a large loading opening. When travelling with luggage, there is no comparison: in the Avant you can use the space up to the roof, carry objects almost 2 metres long, or take advantage of the many options Audi offers for organising the load, including nets, dividers or sliding rails with hooks. Furthermore, the rear seats of the Audi A4 Avant also have a few extra centimetres of headroom.

The range of engine and transmission combinations to choose from is as wide as for the saloon. In petrol, the range starts with the 1.4 TFSI of 110 kW (150 CV), which can be fitted with a 6-speed manual gearbox or the S tronic dual-clutch. Above it is the 2.0 TFSI of 190 CV, always with S tronic gearbox, and the option of quattro traction. The entry diesel version is the 2.0 TDI in its 90 kW (122 CV) variant, followed by the same engine with 150 or 190 CV, the former available with S tronic gearbox or in quattro version with manual gearbox, and the most powerful with S tronic gearbox as an alternative to the manual, and with an automatic version that can also have quattro traction.

The most powerful variants in the range use the 3-litre V6 TDI, with 218 CV, S tronic gearbox and optional quattro traction, or with 272 CV, in this case always with quattro traction and tiptronic gearbox.

What you get if you choose the Black line edition series

For the Audi A4 Avant, above the base trim the brand offers the Advanced edition, design edition, S line edition special series and the Black line edition in question. Each one adds equipment over the previous one, whether functional or stylistic. And all have an advantage: the final price, taking into account what they cost, is well below what it would take to add all their extra equipment to the base version by ordering the options separately. In addition, there is an extra promotion of 2,500 euros off the final list price if the purchase is financed through the brand’s finance company.

In the case of the Audi A4 Black line edition, the additional equipment compared with the other versions is similar to that of the S line edition series, so it already includes Tempomat cruise control, rain and light sensor, Audi smartphone interface, MMI Navigation system, Audi connect Safety & Service services, S line exterior package, sports front seats, 3-zone climate control, multifunction sports steering wheel and the advanced parking assistance system Audi parking System plus.

The distinctive details of the Black line edition compared with the S line edition add a grille in glossy dark grey, a colour also applied to the window frames, the exterior mirror housings and the side air intake inserts. The roof bars are in matt black, and the alloy wheels become 19-inch, signed by Audi Sport and with a titanium-look finish. And the equipment is not closed: you can use the options list to complete it according to your preferences or needs.

The prices of the Audi A4 Avant Black line edition range run from 40,250 euros for the 1.4 TFSI of 110 kW up to 60,530 euros for the V6 TDI 200 kW (272 CV) with quattro traction and tiptronic gearbox. One of the most interesting versions for its balance of price, performance and consumption is the Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDI of 190 CV with the excellent S tronic dual-clutch gearbox, which costs barely 840 euros more than the manual variant. This is because with the automatic the average consumption is reduced, bringing CO2 emissions down to 116 g/km, compared with 121 g/km for the manual version, which allows the S tronic to be exempt from the Registration Tax.

Audi announces an offer for the A4 Avant Black line edition from 250 euros a month. It is a renting deal, calculated for the 2.0 TDI version of 122 CV. It involves a contract of 36 monthly instalments with a total of 45,000 euros (can be extended), with an initial payment of 6,487 euros (prices excluding VAT). This contract includes vehicle maintenance except tyre changes, comprehensive insurance with no excess, and travel assistance.

Besides the A4 Avant, Audi offers the Black line edition special series on the Audi A6 Avant, on the Q3, Q5 and Q7 models of its SUV range, on the compact Audi A3, and on the sporty Audi TT Coupé.
