Buying guide Hyundai i20: equipment and prices for Spain.
The new Hyundai i20 is now on sale, with 3-door and 5-door bodies and the Active version. We help you choose the best option by engine, equipment and price.
You can find all the details on what has changed and how the new model drives in our road test of the new Hyundai i20, which we carried out at the time of the international presentation. At that point, the prices and equipment for Spain had not yet been defined. Now that sales have begun, it’s time to analyse them and decide which is the best buy for each need.
Three engines, petrol only, and three bodies
The first thing to note is that the new Hyundai i20 is offered with three petrol engines: a 75 CV naturally aspirated 1.2, and the turbocharged three-cylinder 1.0 in 100 and 120 CV versions. The Hyundai i20 versions with 5-door bodies are available with all three engines, although the least powerful is only offered with the base Essence trim, and the most powerful with the top-spec Style trim. The 100 CV 1.0 lets you choose between the Essence and Tecno trims.

The 3-door body version of the i20 is a special case: for the moment it is only combined with the Sport-specific trim of this variant, and with the most powerful 1.0 engine. As for the Active versions, which are the 5-door i20s with higher ground clearance and styling elements that give it a crossover look, the only engine is the 100 CV 1.0, and the available trims are Klass and Tecno.
Discounts that can reach almost 6,000 euros
This is the first thing to keep in mind: on top of the official list prices, Hyundai advertises discounts of 3,795 euros for the entry-level version of the range, and 3,150 euros for the rest… except for the i20 Active, which will also have its own discounts. Therefore, if you are considering this more eye-catching version with a certain SUV air, a comparison with the 5-door i20 at the same trim and equipment level tells us that the price difference makes the i20 Active about 1,700 euros more expensive. Check with the dealership, because the discount Hyundai applies to the new i20 Active may not be the same as on the 5-door i20, and that difference could be around 2,000 euros, or even more.

Also bear in mind that, as is usual with Hyundai, the current discount can be much higher if you hand in a car in exchange and finance the purchase through the brand. By doing both, you can reduce the list price by accumulating all the discounts, up to 5,895 euros.

Which version to choose?
Here we have no doubts at all. If you want a 3-door, it has to be the 120 CV, no question. If you prefer the Active, there is no option other than the 100 CV 1.0. Of the three versions available on the 5-door i20, we would rule out the 75 CV 1.2 for performance reasons and because it is only combined with the lower trim. And unless your budget stretches, we would also skip the 120 CV, because you don’t need the Style trim or the extra performance of this version, especially given how well the 100 CV 1.0 performs.

Our ideal i20 is therefore the 5-door 1.0 100 CV with the Tecno trim, which already comes with all the equipment we consider necessary. And if you are willing to spend more, the 1,600 euros that the 7-speed DCT dual-clutch automatic gearbox costs would be better spent than moving up a step in power, which would also force you to “take on” the top trim.

In the Tecno trim, which is the one we recommend, you already get a car with air conditioning, four electric windows, central locking with alarm, electric heated mirrors, cruise control, front parking sensor, 16-inch alloy wheels, rain and light sensor, 7-inch multimedia screen, multifunction steering wheel, rear camera, hill start assist and lane departure warning.
