Cars over 11 years old will not be allowed to drive in central Madrid

It seems that Madrid City Council will follow the example of other European cities, such as Berlin, London or Rome. The city centre will become a low-emission zone that will not allow entry to vehicles that do not meet the Euro 3 standard. This means that most cars manufactured before 2000 will not be able to drive through the centre (most, because some high-end models from earlier years do meet the standard).
The announcement was made by Ana Botella, the councillor for the environment. She stressed that until now nothing similar had been done in Spain for environmental reasons.
At present, they are studying which control system they will use to ensure that the affected vehicles do not enter the zone. That said, Madrid has the advantage of being able to draw on the methods already implemented by cities that have launched a similar initiative.
