Two Duesenberg J cars in a drag race

Duesenberg J

One of the classic car brands that most amazes at gatherings or shows of vintage vehicles is Duesenberg. To give you an idea, talking about these cars in the 1920s was something for a select few, a privilege shared with other luxury brands of the era such as Hispano-Suiza, Isotta-Fraschini, Mercedes-Benz, or Rolls-Royce.

The Duesenbergs that exist today are worth a great deal, a huge amount of money. That is why the most unusual place to find a Duesenberg today is on a track, lined up alongside another Duesenberg. Not just to be displayed, but to race a drag race.

To get you in the mood, here are some details about the Duesenberg J’s powertrain: an inline eight-cylinder engine, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, an optional turbocharger producing 265 horsepower, three-speed transmission and a top speed of around 170 km/h. It was a true aircraft within the world of cars of those years.

Finally, I wanted to see what it feels like to ride inside a Duesenberg and how these beasts sound, so I went to YouTube and found what I was looking for. Or rather, better: two Duesenberg J’s engaged in a drag race, which I show you below. And don’t be shocked by how these two cars, now 80 years old, are being used. They are only doing what they were originally built for.
