Early sketches of the Skoda Scala Spider

The first drawings of a convertible Scala have been unveiled. It is the seventh car from the students of the Skoda Academy and will be presented in June of this year.

For a few months now, around twenty students from the Skoda Vocational Training School have been working on the seventh Student Prototype. With boundless creativity, they have now presented us with a new sketch of what a convertible body would look like: the Skoda Scala Spider.

Not long ago we brought you a full road test of one of the versions of the Skoda Scala that will be sold most widely. The Czech brand is booming with a broad range of models and continues with launches in 2020. Within this range, many carry the ECO and 0 DGT labels thanks to their hybrid, plug-in hybrid or 100% electric systems. The next model to arrive will be the Octavia RS iV, which becomes the first RS family model to use plug-in hybrid technology.

June 2020: the date to mark

In creating these first sketches and drafts, the students received advice and help from the staff of the Skoda Design department. So far we have been able to see two sketches, one of the car’s interior and another of its exterior. Although it is difficult to judge the design of the future model from computer drawings, interesting changes compared with the conventional Scala can be glimpsed.

Being a Spider body, the roof and the entire rear section of the original vehicle are removed, resulting in a rear end that resembles a blipaza. Although we do not have the design of the grille, the rear does seem to have a muscular and sporty look, with two large bulges on its tailgate. These two humps give it an undoubtedly imposing presence.

This tradition at Skoda, with its 20 students, seems to be very successful, as the Czech firm keeps the initiative going. But attention is focused on June of this year, when the students will present the sketches at full scale. It will be at that point that we see a somewhat more definitive design and the indicative proportions the future Skoda Scala Spider will have. Its name is not official for the moment either, but given its body style, the Czechs have so far attached that nickname to their future convertible.
