With the Le Mans asphalt still warm, we are already looking forward to the 2020 edition, whose wait will be made more bearable thanks to the film based on the story leading up to the 1966 edition

In the nearly 90 editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the race and its surroundings have offered countless stories, from epic moments to the most tragic events.

But some years are special, and 1966 left in History, in capital letters, one of the stories that deserves to be brought to the cinema.

As happened with the legendary 1971 film starring Steve McQueen, whose title could not be more specific, Le Mans, where the epic of the race is recounted in detail over its 108 minutes, the one that will premiere on 15 November 2019 promises to recap the story following the victory of Ford in the 1966 race.

Le Mans 1966: Ford VS Ferrari

In the 1960s, the Cavallino of Ferrari capitalised on the victories of the first six races of the decade, from 1960 to 1965. The Ferrari TR60, TR61, 330TRI/LM, 250P, 275P and 250LM were drenched in champagne and had their names inscribed in the book of winners.

This troubled Henry Ford II, son of the creator and owner of the American brand, who had tried to buy the Italian company and who watched as Enzo Ferrari showed, year after year, its supremacy.

That is why Ford himself decided that he would be responsible for taking the glory away from Ferrari, and he would build his own racing car.

The story told in the film Ford v Ferrari portrays that struggle against Ferrari, against the technology and, almost, against the regulations, in pursuit of the goal: building the best racing car and keeping the Italians out of first place in the ultimate endurance race.

The cast of Le Mans ’66, Ford V Ferrari

This film was directed by James Mangold, who was also in charge of films such as Logan, and he wanted the images to show the reality of the events, so he ruled out digitising the races, using real cars on the asphalt.

A film, Le Mans ’66, whose lead actors are Matt Damon and Christian Bale, bringing to life illustrious figures in the automotive industry and motorsport such as Carroll Shelby and the driver Ken Miles, respectively.
