From virtual to reality: BMW i Motorsport simulator
Before achieving victory in Formula E, with a car such as the BMW iFE.18, enormous amounts of work in virtual environments were necessary. The engineers working on the BMW i Motorsport project use a simulation for their development.
To achieve victory on a Formula E circuit, a great deal of virtual preparation is required. Engineers at the German manufacturer use a simulation-based system to carry out their work.

It is in this simulator that most testing takes place, both during the development phase and in preparation before the race. Without a sophisticated simulator, participation in championships such as the ABB FIA Formula E would be unfeasible.
The drivers also prepare inside this simulator, where they gain experience not only of the circuit, but also of the acceleration that an electric car produces, among other things.
In the words of rookie driver Sims:
“The experience offered by simulation technology is incredibly valuable, especially for me as a rookie. Thanks to this technology, the virtual immersion generated by the simulator is very similar to reality, even helping me improve my personal bests.”
During this type of simulation, every detail is analysed to the millimetre. The focus lies on the simulator’s own software, which is programmed by the engineers of BMW themselves.
Besides the software, the hardware also requires special attention. It is responsible for conveying realism in the driving position, the seating position at the wheel, or the transmission, among other factors.
It seems that in this classic field, such as motor racing, new technologies have come to stay. Soon drivers will gain more experience from hours in the simulator than in real cars.
