HRE Wheels is the creator of the first 3D-printed titanium wheel
3D printing is one of the most promising technologies of this century, as it will allow us to create all kinds of objects in a few hours if we have certain materials available. Today we will look at its application in the automotive sector.
A few years ago, 3D technology began to become “popular”. Since then, it has always been thought that it would become one of the most relevant technologies of the 21st century. However, years later, even though we can have one of these devices in our own home, it has not yet become standardised, because, although people find it hard to believe, everything takes time, and this technology is still in its “infancy”.

Large industries, however, capable of investing hundreds of thousands of euros in developing and having access to the latest innovations in this field, have truly incredible possibilities for developing complex objects.
The automotive industry is the latest to have been surprised by the efficiency of this type of technique. HRE Wheels has shown that there are still many things to discover within the broad field offered by 3D printing, and for this reason, they have managed to print the first wheel made of titanium, which is remarkable considering that this material is one of the hardest on the planet.

HRE Wheels in collaboration with GE Additive has created what has become the first 3D-printed titanium wheel in history. The wheel in question has been named HRED3D+, and its arrival in the automotive sector aims to change everything.
It is most common for the wheels fitted to vehicles to be forged, created through a process carried out from a block of aluminium, eliminating up to 80% of this material.
This process is clear evidence of waste of resources, energy and time, which is why HRE Wheels has invested money and effort in achieving the printing of the first 3D titanium wheel in history.

Unlike the process explained above, with this method only 5% of the material used is lost, that is, titanium instead of aluminium in this case. This material is stronger and lighter, which is clearly better for any vehicle worth its salt.
These wheels have been fitted to an impressive McLaren P1, an incredible choice to highlight this achievement thanks to the beautiful lines of such a desirable model, this super sports car from the prestigious English manufacturer.
Below we leave you the video where you can see the result on this beautiful model:
