Lincoln denies wanting to give the Continental new life

With Mercury out of the picture for good, the question was how Lincoln’s transformation would be carried out, a satellite brand that Ford has chosen to keep. The intention is for Ford to keep Lincoln as a very exclusive brand, promising models that will compete with the Germans, which already says a lot. However, the Continental is not coming back.

The Lincoln Continental, one of those ridiculously huge sedans from the 60s and 70s, would have seen the light of day again as the best-equipped and most luxurious model from the Dearborn boys. Removed from the lineup in 2002, it would no longer be a typically American sedan, the kind that has passed through Detroit without fanfare. Plans have changed, and the Continental will remain safely under wraps, at least for now.

With competitors as well established in the US such as Cadillac, and faced with the challenge of matching the Audi and Mercedes, Continental still had a long and winding road ahead if it wanted to position itself as a true luxury car.

Among Lincoln’s plans, several models remain in limbo, but the most sadly remembered car in the US, the one that carried Kennedy on the day of his assassination, will not return to the showrooms.
