Madrid will reward hybrid vehicles with a 50% discount on parking fees
Madrid City Council continues its fight to reduce the city’s air pollution by promoting significant discounts so that hybrid and electric cars pay less in areas where parking is regulated, in order to encourage the use of this type of vehicle

Madrid City Council’s fight against environmental pollution in the city is filling newspaper pages and opening every television news bulletin. There is, of course, a wide range of opinions, but it is very interesting to see how an major problem of our century, the presence of polluting gases in our cities, is being addressed. So, in addition to the deterrent measures Madrid residents are currently experiencing, efforts are being made to encourage the presence of hybrid and electric cars to keep this pollution under control.
The measures are not very large, but they help make it appealing for the city’s own residents to consider owning one of these vehicles, which turn out to be far less polluting than combustion vehicles in general and, above all, diesel ones.
A 30% greater saving for hybrid drivers
Currently, the saving for hybrid and electric vehicles in regulated parking zones is 20%, but from 1 July 2017 onwards it will increase to 50%, making it much cheaper for this type of vehicle than for the rest of those that use these spaces to park.
This increase in the reduction of parking rates is provided for in the new Fiscal Ordinance regulating the Parking Fee for Vehicles in certain areas of the capital for 2017, approved on 20 October by the Madrid City Council’s Governing Board and ratified yesterday, 29 December, at an Extraordinary Plenary Session that ratified the Fiscal Ordinances and Public Prices for 2017.
The real impact of this increase is not expected to be very high, but it will help some Madrid residents be encouraged to purchase hybrid and electric vehicles, at least for driving around the city centre, thereby helping to reduce the problem they face in a city of over 3.1 million inhabitants.
