Milence will open a charging hub for electric trucks in Zaragoza (Spain)

If everything goes according to plan, this new charging hub for electric trucks will begin operating in the first half of 2025, although no specific date has been given.

Milence, the joint venture created in 2022 between Daimler Truck and the Traton Group and Volvo, with the aim of accelerating the transition to electric mobility in long-distance road transport, has just announced its intention to open its first charging hub in Spain.

These new facilities will be located in Zaragoza, specifically at the Logistics Platform of the Aragonese capital -PlaZa-. The company’s plans involve installing up to 1,700 public charging points for electric trucks by 2027, spread along the major road transport routes in charging hubs such as the one to be opened in Zaragoza next year.

That is why the choice of Zaragoza is no coincidence. The chosen location offers easy access from high-traffic truck routes, such as the A2 motorway that links Madrid and Barcelona, as well as a connection to Zaragoza airport. The Aragonese capital is also part of two important TEN-T corridors of the Trans-European Transport Network: the Mediterranean corridor, which links Algeciras with Eastern Europe; and the Atlantic corridor, which runs from Portugal to the French border, facilitating access to northern Europe.

Charging at one megawatt of power in the near future

The construction of this new charging hub in Zaragoza will follow a two-phase plan. In the first phase, CCS chargers will be installed, capable of delivering up to 400 kW. The second phase will include expansion with additional bays equipped with the MCS system, which is currently under development, allowing much faster charging of heavy-duty vehicles, reaching one megawatt of power.

Anja van Niersen, Milence’s current Chief Executive Officer, has been in charge of announcing the news. The company’s head has explained the reasons that will lead Milence to build its first charging hub for electric trucks in Spain at the Zaragoza Logistics Platform. An ideal location, in his words, to start the expansion of this joint venture in southern Europe, with the goal of creating the largest charging network for electric trucks on the continent.

Milence plans to have a total of 70 charging hubs in Europe by the end of 2025, which implies the opening of new facilities of this type at least every week. It is an enormously ambitious goal, but one the company considers entirely feasible, especially with the support of local authorities, as has happened with the Government of Aragon in the project to open a new charging hub at the Zaragoza Logistics Platform.
