The Cupra Formentor definitive will be presented at the Geneva Motor Show
The Cupra Formentor will be the first own model of the young Spanish brand, which is why they have chosen the Geneva Motor Show to present it officially
It has been almost a year since we first met the new Cupra Formentor, a very important launch for the young brand, as it will be its first own model. For this reason, they have chosen the 2020 Geneva Motor Show, one of the most important showcases in the automotive world, to make the official debut of its next model.
The Swiss show opens its doors on March 5, so we only have a few days left to officially see the final version of the Cupra Formentor. It will be the second time the model has walked the Geneva carpet, as last year we saw the first prototype.
We have recently seen the new Cupra León, the most sporty version of the fourth generation of the Seat León and, although, for the moment, the Formentor will have no equivalent at Seat, it will have a great kinship with the Spanish compact.
In fact, the new Cupra Formentor will be based on the same architecture as the Seat León, that is, the MQB EVO platform on which the new Volkswagen Golf 2020 is also built. We find it hard to believe that Seat will not take advantage of this newly designed model to add it to its range, something that Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, design director of the Spanish brand, already hinted at.
What engines will the Cupra Formentor presented in Geneva have?
The kinship of the Cupra Formentor with the Cupra León will be accentuated even further in its mechanical range, and it is more than possible that it will share engines with it. Therefore, we almost take for granted that it will have a petrol variant and, most importantly, a PHEV version with which it will achieve the DGT Environmental Badge 0.
Let us recall that the compact from the brand will come with three petrol engines available, based on the 2.0 TSI mechanics, all of them associated with the seven-speed DSG automatic transmission:
The first option has a power output of 245 CV, the middle one reaches 300 CV and the last one, which is only available in the estate version of the compact, offers a power output of no less than 310 CV. This last one would be for the fastest Cupra Formentor in the range, so it would be capable of going from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 5 seconds and would reach a top speed of 250 km/h.
Will there be a Cupra Formentor e-Hybrid?
Furthermore, the Cupra Formentor has every chance of arriving with a PHEV variant, something the Cupra León eHybrid already debuted as a major novelty. In this case, it would have a powertrain made up of the 1.4 TSI engine with 150 CV combined with an electric motor of 115 CV, so that the total power would be 245 CV.
This would have a 13 kWh battery capacity with which it would achieve just over 50 kilometres of electric range – slightly less than the Cupra León due to its greater size. In this way, the plug-in hybrid Cupra Formentor would be a sporty SUV with the DGT Environmental Badge 0.
There are only a few days left to meet the new Cupra model officially, so we will give you more information as well as what interests us all most: the price of the Cupra Formentor.
