The Mini John Cooper Works with Valvetronic technology will be unveiled in September

Some general details about the Valvetronic version of the Mini John Cooper Works, which will be unveiled in September.

In a few months’ time, Mini will present its models fitted with the new engine featuring Valvetronic technology for the John Cooper Works. Although the new engine will only deliver 3 more horsepower than its predecessors, it is aimed at increasing torque, with a substantial improvement in performance and better fuel efficiency per kilometre.

Among the general features that Mini has released, the changes to the 1.6 engine begin with new intake valves and pistons, reinforced versions of the originals, and improvements to both the air intake and the exhaust gas outlet. A more generous intercooler will also be fitted to the turbo.

For those who prefer the Mini with an automatic gearbox, there will be a reprogramming of the automatic transmission software, which will work better with the new engine characteristics and the All4 traction system. The Getrag gearbox will also be modified with a revised sixth-gear ratio, in order to handle the higher torque.

The final figures that Mini has provided for the Valvetronic engine show an output of 214 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 207 lb-ft between 2,000 and 5,600 rpm. According to Mini, fuel consumption will be similar to that of the Mini Cooper S.

The new model will be shown in September, with sales planned to begin during 2013. We will surely bring you more details about this model, which gives the JCW a significant technical update, around August or September.
