The S80, V70 and XC70 receive the updated D3 and D5 engines

The improved versions of the main Volvo diesel engine units have just been introduced in the ranges of the most luxurious models of the Swedish brand. Although both the D3 and the D5 receive modifications, the latter is the more important case, as it has the largest number of versions and results in the most significant reduction in consumption and emissions.
The two-litre D3 retains its 163 CV of power and 400 Nm of maximum torque, but it features a revised turbocharger for better performance. Likewise, this autumn it can be combined with the six-speed automatic gearbox and the Start&Stop system in the S80 and V70, the latter soon to be available on any Volvo model with the manual gearbox.

As for the 2.4-litre D5, its power has risen from 205 to 215 horsepower and its maximum torque from 420 to 440 Nm, and other mechanical changes have allowed it to use 8% less diesel than before with the manual gearbox. In this way, this gearbox fitted to an S80 D5 means the saloon consumes only 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres and emits 129 grams of CO2 per kilometre, exactly the same figures this model achieves with the D3 engine. If combined with the automatic, these rise to 6 litres and 158 grams.
The D5 in the V70 with the manual gearbox consumes 5.1 l/100 km and emits 134 g/km, and with the automatic 6.2 and 164 respectively, whereas extrapolated to the XC70 these become 5.6 and 149 with the manual and 6.8 and 179 with the automatic. Another novelty is that the S80 and V70 now also have the eco-friendly DRIVe variant ready, with the 1.6 Diesel engine producing 115 CV that we already saw in the S60 and V60.
