The strangest fines you can get and that can even take away points
Leave work, get in the car, park in front of the residential complex, take a dip in the pool to cool off, dry yourself off in that way and head back to the car on the way home… fined! Why? For parking in a prohibited area, driving in flip-flops, or for playing music too loud?
Any of these three situations is valid, since any of those actions can be punishable and you may not have known it or realised it.
That is precisely why we are going to address fines from the perspective of carelessness or ignorance, in order to preserve your DGT points balance, and remember that one of the keys to not losing your driving licence is always to stay informed and up to date on the law.
Pulling away with a screeching start
It’s 3 p.m. and the half-day shift is coming to an end. You get into the car and, vroooooom! the wheels spinning and the tyres smoking… worthy of a film or a Fast & Furious series… Well, not only have you just lost about 50 euros wearing out your tyres, but the local police have caught you and you’ve earned a 100-euro fine for a minor offence, which is how this type of getaway is classified.

Stopping or parking in urban public transport lanes
As we said at the beginning, that typical “But officer, it was only for a moment,” when the vehicle is left parked anywhere so you can take a quick dip, the car may have been parked in the lanes reserved for urban public transport, an act punished with 2 points and 100 euros.
Driving with inappropriate clothing or footwear
Flip-flops, towels, beach wraps, swimming trunks or bikinis… driving with footwear that does not guarantee contact and grip with the pedals can lead to a fine, as can wearing clothing, footwear or accessories that may compromise control of the car.
Furthermore, directly wearing the seatbelt over bare skin can cause chafing or injuries, so it is better to change before getting into the car than to risk driving without a seatbelt, for which you can be fined 3 points and 200 euros.
Nor is it an excuse to carry children under 1.35 metres without an approved restraint system or without harnesses or belts fastened, nor “but it’s just around the corner.” Also punished with 3 points and 200 euros for the driver of the vehicle.

Driving without paying attention
Getting out of the pool and touching up your make-up or styling your quiff is common, but it may not be a good idea if it is done inside the car once you have already set off, since driving a vehicle without paying attention to the driving is also grounds for a penalty, 200 euros.
We take this opportunity to remind you that, at least for now, smoking has not been banned§h33? while driving, but it is recognised as one of the risk factors at the wheel.

Sounding the horn, producing mechanical noises or using the multimedia system
It’s summer, the days are longer and the party nights even more so, which is why you want to share your happiness with the neighbours and you turn your car’s music up very loud so that everyone can enjoy (or suffer) your musical tastes… then a neighbour, very wisely, calls the police and… an €80 fine for making noise in a residential area during rest hours, not to mention that there is a hospital just around the corner.
Incorrect use of lights
Summer storms are common during the hot season, which is why, especially after a long dry spell, one of them may catch us by surprise and then it is necessary to use the appropriate lighting.
Both driving without lights and using them without complying with what is established by regulation, that is, keeping them on when not necessary, carries a fine of 2 points and 100 euros.
Not keeping a safe following distance
You are driving on a road with one lane in each direction at the maximum permitted speed, but that damned car is tailgating you as if it were a GT championship race at IMSA… well, you should know that if officers detect this behaviour, it is grounds for a penalty. A fine of 4 points and 200 euros.
Preventing or hindering overtaking
Then you try to overtake in any way you can, and not only do you attempt to do so in a prohibited zone (fine of 4 points and 200 euros), but to prevent it you accelerate and block or put obstacles in the way of their overtaking… that attitude may be just as dangerous as theirs, and it is likewise punishable with the same 4 points and the same 200 euros.

Then you give up completely: the Guardia Civil have caught you and fined you. After filling in the document, the officer hands it to you in person and, as you pull away, you crumple it into a ball and throw it out of the window in protest…
That was a bad move, because, besides having earned the fine, uncivil behaviour shows contempt for the environment, and this time you have escaped being fined a second time because, had it been a dangerous object or something that could start a fire instead of a piece of paper, it would have been punished with another 4 points and 200 euros.
When reality surpasses fiction
These are only a few invented examples with a real basis, but if after reading these fictional situations you are still curious to know which behaviours lead to the fines that remove the most points, you have a summary article covering these penalties.
