The Volvo XC40 will be the first electric car from the Swedish brand
The Volvo XC40 will receive a 100% electric variant from 2019. This version will join the plug-in hybrid option and could be available from around 40,000 euros.
The Volvo XC40 will be the first 100% electric model from the Swedish brand to reach the market, as confirmed by Tomas Ingenlath, head of design at Volvo. The electric version of the compact SUV will join the plug-in hybrid variant in 2019. The Nordic manufacturer’s plans involve producing only electrified cars (hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles) from 2019 onwards.

The second electric model from Volvo will be the XC90
In statements to the British publication Autocar, the head of design at Volvo has not only confirmed the arrival of an electric XC40, but also which will be the second zero-emission vehicle to join the range. “It is no longer a secret that the first 100% electric Volvo is on its way, and it will be an XC40. This model will arrive shortly after the Polestar 2. We will start with the Volvo XC40 and progressively launch new electrified models. The second electric model from Volvo will be the XC90,” Ingenlath said.

The electric version of the Volvo XC40 will be built on the brand’s new compact modular CMA platform. With this architecture, the compact SUV will offer a length of just 4.42 metres, 6 centimetres less than a Nissan Leaf, for example. The electric XC40 is estimated to be available from 40,000 euros, while its range would be at least 320 km.

As with Tesla or Hyundai, Volvo wants to offer several mechanical versions in the new electric XC40. In this regard, it is worth noting that the Swedish manufacturer has registered the names P5 and P10, two names that would correspond to the versions of the new XC40. Consequently, the compact SUV is expected to offer an entry-level variant with lower performance (power and range) and a higher-performance, longer-range alternative (probably over 320 km).
