Nissan has just unveiled its new Nissan ProPILOT 2.0 driver assistance system alongside the launch of the new Nissan Skyline.

This is how the Nissan ProPILOT 2.0 driver assistance system works. The brand has taken advantage of the unveiling of the new Nissan Skyline to incorporate the new ProPILOT 2.0 technology. This system is the first driver assistance system that combines assisted motorway driving with autonomous single-lane driving capabilities.

It is important to highlight that, in addition to fitting the ProPILOT 2.0 system, the new Nissan Skyline also features NissanConnect, which offers a wide range of connectivity services.

How does the Nissan ProPILOT 2.0 work?

The new Nissan system has been designed for motorway driving. It connects to the vehicle’s navigation system to help steer along a predetermined route. For the first time, ProPILOT 2.0 allows the car to drive along a single lane without the driver needing to hold the steering wheel.

Before activating the new functions, the driver must enter their destination into the navigation system to generate a predetermined route. When the car enters the motorway, the system’s assisted driving function becomes available. Once activated, this system helps the driver drive on multi-lane motorways; it provides assistance with overtaking, lane changes and exits, until reaching the predetermined motorway exit.

“The new ProPILOT system also allows the car to drive along a single lane without the driver needing to hold the steering wheel. When the vehicle approaches a fork or if it can overtake another vehicle travelling more slowly, the system analyses the right moment to change lane or overtake based on the information it receives from the navigation system and the 360º sensors. For its part, the driver receives very intuitive audible and visual alerts when the system asks them to place both hands on the steering wheel and confirm the start of these manoeuvres using a switch,” said Nissan.

When the ProPILOT 2.0 system is active, a monitoring system located in the cabin continuously checks whether the driver is paying attention to the road. If the driver ignores a warning while driving, the system activates the hazard lights and reduces the vehicle’s speed until it comes to a complete stop.

In addition, an emergency call service automatically establishes an audio connection with an operator at a telephone assistance centre to handle emergency situations.

NissanConnect, the brand’s other new connectivity system

The improved NissanConnect system offers a wide range of features and services, including wireless automatic map updates that reduce the time and effort needed to update navigation maps.

“Door-to-door” navigation integrates the car’s navigation system with the driver’s smartphone, enabling seamless navigation from the driver’s original location to the final destination, even after they have left the car.

The “Docomo in Car Connect” function provides Wi-Fi access in the car, eliminating the need to use phone data while driving. This system also offers customisable alerts via an app for the smartphone. These alerts include vehicle speed, estimated arrival time notifications and geographic boundary settings.
