Volkswagen will connect the vehicle with the customer through its revolutionary software called

Volkswagen is developing a new software called “We” that will keep the vehicle connected with the user and the brand itself.

The automotive and technology worlds have been walking hand in hand for years, but now we can see the results of this combination in a clearer and more precise way. Volkswagen, a company that has introduced major revolutions in its range of vehicles, has wanted to go one step further. Thanks to the development of new software that will keep both drivers connected with their vehicle and, in turn, these vehicles connected with each other. We will be able to see this process applied to the I.D models of Volkswagen, that is, those that rely on electricity as their source of power.

This new software has been named “We” and will allow users of Volkswagen models to turn their car into a complete electronic device on wheels. Thanks to this system, customers will be able to create a unique ecosystem around their Volkswagen, transferring all kinds of information and making driving easier in many respects.

The “We” ecosystem: much simpler for the car and for the driver

One of the main goals of Volkswagen’s engineers is not only to create a much more direct connection between the driver and the vehicle, but also to make their manufacturing simpler and more straightforward. Michael Jost, one of the leading executives in Volkswagen’s strategy department, has confirmed that the I.D models of the German firm will enjoy stunning mechanical simplicity, and that this will considerably reduce complications at the wheel.

This new software is based on the so-called vw.OS, an operating system that Volkswagen itself is developing. Jost states that, thanks to this, it will be possible to decisively separate hardware from software, meaning the software will receive constant updates and the vehicle’s internal system will never become obsolete.

2020 will be the turning point for Volkswagen

Today, the German firm already offers its customers many options not only to connect to the vehicle, but also to link virtually any electronic device. This is possible thanks to the system called Volkswagen Connect, but starting in 2020 the German company will establish a total connection with its vehicles.

Volkswagen aims to have more than 5 million fully connected vehicles, a feat that will allow the brand to bring us directly closer to that future which, until recently, seemed very distant. However, this connection will be beneficial not only for the relationship between the customer and their car, but also for the relationship with the dealership itself.

Thanks to the broad ecosystem that Volkswagen intends to introduce into the future I.D family, dealerships will be able to observe and analyze vehicle maintenance without the vehicle having to physically visit the workshop. In this way, both technicians and customers will be able to save a considerable amount of time.

The ODP system will act as a cloud between customers and Volkswagen

Volkswagen intends to digitize the entire system, so it has been necessary to bring to life a cloud that will keep our Volkswagen I.D wirelessly connected to the brand itself and to dealerships. This is called ODP and is made possible by the IT architecture the company used to develop this new system.

However, creating this new technology comes at a cost, and Volkswagen will invest a total of 3.5 million euros. In this way, the German firm aims to offer its customers a fully established and connected network by 2025.
