Volvo and Google are developing an operating system based on Android
Volvo has made the surprising decision not to unveil new models at the Los Angeles Show. Instead, it has chosen to showcase technologies that it will integrate into its vehicles in the future. One of these developments includes a new operating system that will be developed together with Google.
According to several sources, everything points to the Swedish manufacturer developing an operating system based on the successful Android, with the constant collaboration of Google. Apparently, it will become one of the most advanced in the entire industry once developed.

Details are still scarce at this point, probably even more so since the basic structure of the software itself is still being worked on. What we can say is that the technology seems set to go far beyond the connectivity offered by Android Auto.
We are talking about a new operating system, which will translate into a completely independent and customized operations hub for the manufacturer, with unlimited potential based on the updates that will arrive over time.
On the other hand, the real benefit of this system will come from the Apps (applications). Not only will applications such as Google Maps or Spotify integrate seamlessly with the software, but new apps such as Amazon’s for cars and many other interesting ones will also have a place.

The new operating system is expected to be launched during 2020. Volvo will not be the only beneficiary. This new Android-based OS will also be implemented in Polestar vehicles. Other brands, such as Lotus, could also benefit.
In countries like China, things could get difficult for this software, since, due to its strict policies on internet connections with the outside world, the OS in question would have to be adapted.

What is still a mystery is how this operating system will be made compatible with Apple devices, since, as we know, these use an iOS-based OS. However, we have no doubt that it will be made compatible with some type of update in the future.
