The Swedish firm has confirmed that from 2019 its entire range of vehicles will be electrified, comprising both battery electric cars and hybrids.

In recent years, many car companies have been betting on developing electric vehicles with the aim of curbing pollution. One of the manufacturers intending to consolidate its position as a leader in the zero-emission vehicle industry is Volvo, which has announced that all vehicles it launches from 2019 onwards will be either hybrids or 100% electric.

In a statement, Volvo has said it wants to completely eliminate combustion engines from its vehicles. The Swedish carmaker has confirmed that between 2019 and 2021, at least five fully electric cars will be launched – three of them Volvo and two from the Polestar brand. These models will be joined by a range of plug-in and non-plug-in hybrids, which will feature a new 48-volt power supply.

Volvo has not yet confirmed when its first model with a 48-volt hybrid system will reach the market, but the company’s president has assured that this technology will be available for both petrol and diesel vehicles.

On the other hand, the Swedish firm asserts that it will keep models powered by an internal combustion engine , whether diesel or petrol, during the first years of this transformation process.

According to Hakan Samuelsson, president of Volvo, the decision was taken following demand from customers for zero-emission vehicles. People are increasingly demanding electric cars. This announcement marks the end of combustion cars,” concluded Samuelsson.

In addition, the company’s president has stated that they want to sell a total of one million electric vehicles before 2025, and the decision to eliminate combustion vehicles is key to achieving this.
