What is Movistar Car?

The telecommunications company Telefónica is launching Movistar Car, a novel connectivity service for individuals that will arrive in February of this year.

Telefónica’s new product, Movistar Car, will allow users to connect their vehicle to the network and to the smartphone. In addition, another of the objectives of this service is to provide greater connectivity to the car. Through a device with an OBD port , it will allow us to carry out various functions such as, for example, locating the vehicle. However, not everyone will be able to fit it: only petrol and diesel cars manufactured from 2004 and 2005 respectively.

The features of Movistar Car

Although this service is not yet ready, the telecommunications company opened the reservation period last December until January 31. Its market launch is scheduled for February of this year. As for its price, it will be 20 euros for the sign-up fee and three euros per month. These are its features:

• Movistar offers 3GB of internet: one of the great features of this service is its access and connectivity to the network. In this way, passengers will not have to use their mobile data while travelling. With the arrival of this device, the company offers up to 3GB of internet per month, independent of the phone line.

• Locating our vehicle: although this is not its only function. This option allows us to locate it and receive alerts should our car move.
• Navigation: in addition, this application will search for “optimal” routes along with radar warnings. On the other hand, we will be able to access the trip history or save locations as favourites.
• Alerts on our phone: thanks to Movistar Car, this device will carry out diagnostic checks that alert the driver to possible faults. Likewise, it will have a calendar function: it will remind us of possible appointments for servicing.

• Movistar SOS: through this service, the application will automatically alert the emergency services in the event of an accident. In addition, they will call you to find out your situation and “check that you are all right”.
• Exclusive benefits: by subscribing to this service, users will have discounts on insurance, refuelling or vehicle maintenance.

How does Movistar Car work?

But how does it work? Once we have the device in our possession, we must connect it to the OBD port of the vehicle. Subsequently, we will download and synchronise the application on our smartphone. After these two steps, we can already use the Movistar Car service as usual.
