What is the maximum number of gears a car can have?
Nowadays we can find all kinds of vehicles on the market offering 7 or even 8 gears, especially in the automatic option, but what is the limit?
The car market grows every day, and with it the technology it offers becomes increasingly sophisticated. This also includes gearboxes, which can have a surprising number of gears.
The automatic car sector is growing at an exponentially rapid pace, whether due to the convenience or the sophistication they offer. The truth is that people generally seem to lean towards the automatic option, provided they can afford it, of course.

Because of this growth, manufacturers compete day after day to offer the most advanced gearbox on the market, one that delivers the best performance in terms of consumption and driving feel.
In manual gearboxes, the gear limit is set at 7, which is an incredibly high number but, despite appearances, is widely surpassed by its automatic counterparts.
Among the automatic options, we can find up to 10 gears, an absolutely overwhelming option that raises the obvious question of whether they are really necessary.

Gone are the days when automatic gearboxes were limited to a maximum of 6 gears. In fact, today it is normal to find 7 gears as standard.
As for whether 10 gears are necessary, experts say that a car with more than nine gears does not make much sense, since, when it comes to consumption, we would find no benefit whatsoever.
We can therefore deduce that having 10 gears is nothing more than another of those marketing strategies that companies are so good at. It is enough for people to say their car has 10 gears for them to believe it is better than the neighbour’s without even knowing the benefits or drawbacks, and once again, ignorance becomes the main support of these individuals.

So there you have it: the maximum number of gears you can find on the market today is 10. However, remember that this will not bring you anything relevant beyond increasing the distance between payloads.
