5 DGT measures to improve traffic and safety in 2017

The measures of the Directorate-General for Traffic aim to reduce road fatalities and improve traffic flow.

These are the measures that the Directorate-General for Traffic has set for this year 2017:

  1. Sporting events, cycling rides and other events will be limited in the calendar.

In order to avoid major congestion, certain dates and roads have been set on which sporting events, cycling rides or other events will not be authorised.

  1. Taxis and shared-use vehicles may access the BUS-VAO lane with a single occupant.

The BUS-VAO lane on the A-6 in Madrid may be used by taxis and carsharing vehicles (shared use), regardless of the number of people in the cabin. Zero-emission vehicles will continue to have free access to this carriageway.

  1. Goods transport vehicles (general or dangerous goods) and special vehicles will have restricted access on certain dates and roads.

In order to increase the flow of light vehicle traffic, certain dates and roads will be established on which the circulation of heavy vehicles will be temporarily restricted. For vehicles transporting dangerous goods, the network of roads they must preferably use has been updated (RIMP network).

  1. Traffic restricted to certain vehicles in the event of adverse weather conditions.

When road safety is compromised by dense fog, strong gusts of wind, snow or torrential rain, traffic may be restricted to certain types of vehicles.

  1. Special measures to avoid congestion at certain events

Given the high presence of vehicles in protected natural areas and at sporting, cultural or religious events, a series of measures will be implemented to regulate traffic flow in these areas. Among these measures, the prohibition of parking, the use of one-way streets and the regulation of access stand out.
