A Bugatti Veyron crashes on the autobahn and its occupants escape by a miracle

Expensive, very expensive cars getting into accidents is already a familiar topic that we run into from time to time. Earlier this week we had the news of the priceless Ferrari Dino 246 GT being completely wrecked, and now I come with a Bugatti Veyron which, although it wasn’t destroyed, is going to result in a hefty repair bill (estimated at around 400,000 euros).
By all accounts, the accident was not the result of recklessness, nor even of speed. The driver of this Veyron was on a German autobahn when he came upon an 18-wheeler truck. As he was overtaking it, another car began the same overtaking manoeuvre. Apparently, the second driver didn’t even glance at his rear-view mirror.
The Veyron’s driver did everything possible to brake but couldn’t, and he had no choice but to try to squeeze the car between the truck and the second car. Such a manoeuvre would have looked like something out of a movie, had it worked out. But in reality things were very different. The Veyron struck the truck’s front wheel, then bounced off the other car, and finally crashed into the guardrail.
A lucky accident, in which speed supposedly played no role. But let’s look at the situation. For the Veyron to be unable to brake, it must have been travelling at nearly or more than double the speed of the other vehicle that started the manoeuvre to overtake the truck. Let’s also say that the brakes on the famous Veyron are among the best on the market… so what speed was it actually travelling at?
