The good judge we all wish we’d get when contesting a traffic fine? In Germany, where hidden cameras and other devices are as widespread as anywhere else in the world, a judge who is against the use of cameras and radar has dismissed 42 speeding fines.

The good judge, named Helmut Knoener, argues in his rulings that the use of electronic means to penalise drivers is merely a way to raise more revenue and not a way to improve road safety. In the judge’s opinion, the compulsory punishment system based on cameras is proof of corruption within his country’s government.

Knoener also says that the use of cameras is not legally justified and has called for clarification of some of the regulations concerning speed checks.

But the 42 drivers who thought they had been handed a gift from heaven will not be able to celebrate victory so soon, because Germany’s supreme court can appeal so that the fines are paid, despite what this sharp-minded judge has said.

Will there be anyone else in all of Europe (or in Spain) who imitates him?
