Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA: limited edition with 540 CV

Alfa Romeo The Giulia GTA is the model chosen to celebrate the 110 years of history of the Italian house. Alfa revives one of its motorsport legends.

Next June, Alfa Romeo will mark 110 years of history. It sounds like nothing. More than a century of history has provided more than enough material to recall some of the most iconic and historic models ever seen. Alfa has left us very surprised with this unexpected creation, derived from one of FCA’s most representative models in general, the Giulia.

The GTA nickname stands for “Gran Turismo Alleggerita” (lightened Grand Tourer). Its origin dates back to 1965, when the Giulia Sprint GT received a special version called GTA, with less weight and more power. This road-going version, improved over the production car, achieved such success that these initials would forever be etched into the minds of enthusiasts.

Unleashed power

The new Giulia GTA is not only more powerful but also better prepared to deliver extraordinary performance. Weight has been reduced by 100 kilos compared with the original Giulia QF, thanks to the use of lightweight materials such as carbon fibre for the transmission tunnel, bonnet, roof, wheel arches, bumpers and seatbelts. The specific sports seats in carbon monocoque have also contributed. Aluminium has also been used as a lightweight material for the engine, doors or suspension. This extensive preparation, for both the GTA and GTAm versions, was developed by Sauber Engineering.

The result on the scales is 1,520 kilos of pure fibre and pure muscle. Under the bonnet lies the 2.9-litre V6 twin-turbo engine, which increases power over the Giulia QF by 30 CV. The power-to-weight ratio of the new Giulia GTA is 2.82 kg/CV thanks to a maximum output of 540 CV. Naturally, the new Italian sports car will feature a Launch Control system with the 8-speed automatic gearbox to squeeze out its acceleration and stop the clock in just 3.6 seconds.

Technical specifications

When this new Alfa sports saloon reaches the market, we will know straight away that it is the GTA version. It not only has specific aerodynamic preparations but, at first glance, we will notice that something unusual has happened to the Giulia Quadrifoglio we all knew.

Thanks to the synergy with Sauber Engineering and the use of the Sauber Aerokit, this model is built using technical knowledge coming directly from Formula 1. Side skirts, a specific rear spoiler and an active front splitter are some of these visual elements. The Akrapovic central exhaust system in titanium, integrated into the rear diffuser, and the 20-inch single-lug-nut wheels, a first for a saloon, are two other distinguishing elements.

Only for a few

And now the bad news arrives. The new Giulia GTA and Giulia GTAm will only be produced in a limited edition of 500 units, numbered and certified. Reservations are already officially open and Alfa Romeo will not take long to close them, as these 500 units will sell out fast. Alfa has not revealed release dates but has promised customised kits for customers buying this model, with gifts such as a personalised Goodwood car cover or a Bell helmet in the special GTA colours.
