Alloy wheels vs steel wheels

Wheel weight is usually the deciding factor when choosing one type or the other. However, is there still a substantial difference?

All tyres are mounted on wheels. There are many options to choose from, however, the 2 most common materials for most people are aluminium and steel. Today we will look at the differences between the two so that you have no doubts when making your choice.

Weight is one of the decisive factors that matters most to many customers when choosing their wheels. A lower weight can improve the dynamics of the vehicle, so, almost always, the lighter the wheel, the better.

In the past, alloy wheels were lighter than steel ones and could therefore substantially improve driving performance. Today, however, and thanks to the use of new technologies, this difference is minimal.

The wall thickness of modern steel wheels has been greatly reduced. Thanks to this, the weight difference between an alloy one and a steel one is barely noticeable.

Obviously, if we have money and want to opt for the lightest wheels on the market, we can always spend an outrageous amount of money on magnesium or carbon wheels (carbon fibre). The downside, as we have mentioned, is the price, which is incredibly high. These types of wheels are mainly used in the world of competition.

Some of the most positive aspects of steel wheels is that they provide slightly more stability to our vehicle than alloy ones. On the other hand, this material is more robust and durable than aluminium alloy, so if you are looking for a long service life, steel will be your best ally.

It could be argued that the designs of alloy wheels are more attractive and give your car more style; however, this is a subjective matter, as it will depend on your own personal tastes.

As for the price difference between the two, steel will be the cheaper option. The difference is not especially large, although if you want alloy wheels at any cost, you can opt to buy them at a good price second-hand and thus save a good amount of money.

In short, you will not go wrong between steel and aluminium. In my view, the advantages of steel outweigh those of aluminium, which stand out for aesthetic reasons and a marginally lower weight compared with steel. It is important to note, however, that whatever you choose, you will not have made a mistake.
