Amazing! Top Gear turns a Ssang Yong Rodius into a luxury yacht

The British motoring show has created one of the most curious hybrid fusions ever seen: a luxury yacht – the Sunseeker Hawk 27 – with a Ssang Yong Rodius.

The Ssang Yong Rodius is probably one of the least visually appealing cars around, but what would happen if we turned the South Korean SUV into a luxury yacht? The Top Gear motoring show continues to amaze everyone – many now prefer the BBC show over “The Grand Tour” – and in its latest episode they have created one of the most peculiar vehicles ever seen: a luxury yacht that incorporates the body of the Ssang Yong Rodius on its deck.

Top Gear has always described the Ssang Yong Rodius as a “monstrous” car. “Its interior is simply horrible”, “it’s a vehicle that only an extravagant taxi driver with no sense of shame could drive”, the programme claimed at the time. Despite this, the presenters did not miss the opportunity to carry out this experiment, and the result is a luxury boat – a Sunseeker Hawk 27 – with the dashboard, steering wheel, instrument clusters, seats and boot of a Rodius; that is certainly extravagant…

For the programme’s presenters (Chris Harris, Rory Reid and Matt LeBlanc), their creation greatly improved their opinion of the Ssang Yong Rodius on four wheels. “I have to say it’s much better than I expected. It’s better than driving the Ssang Yong Rodius, in fact I’d say it’s not a complete waste of space,” Harris said during the episode.

The yacht created by Top Gear was also assessed by one of the show’s regular guests, Eddie Jordan (owner of the former Jordan Formula 1 team), and his criticism had nothing to do with Top Gear’s view. “If there are two designs that should never be merged, it’s the Hawk 27 and the Rodius. The idea itself is perverse, an absolute heresy. It looks like the kind of idea a crazy cartoon scientist would come up with,” Jordan said in an article published in Boat International.
