Tips for saving a lot of money when buying a new car

When we buy a car we can choose many options, but some of them we will never use, so we can save money if we don’t add them

When we decide to change our car and we get the courage to buy a new one, we should think about a few things we can do to save some money on the purchase. Even if we think car prices are set in stone, they can actually vary a lot between different dealerships, even within the same province. These price differences could be enough to make us change our minds about which new car we end up buying.

There is a number of small things, a few steps, that can be worthwhile for saving money, which can be taken advantage of at the time of buying the car or, at least, to reduce the total of the final bill. To start with, we can visit several dealerships in the area. Some of them tend to inflate the prices of the models on sale, so we may find very large differences between them.

Do you know exactly which car you want?

Visiting other dealerships in the area may lead us to find a cheaper model with the same features. Even if we like one model more than another, it may be that there is another one on the market with the same features as the one we like best, but at a lower price. Visiting other dealerships may lead us to a different car that still has everything we are looking for, and at a lower price too. This is the main piece of advice we should follow, because it can offer us many surprises.

The price difference between cars in a similar range can be very large, and we can find similar cars at a very reasonable price. You only need to get to know a little about what each dealership is offering. Once the car is chosen, we also need to think about the options. If we can choose the body colour, keep in mind that some colours push the price up more than others.

In addition, new cars are full of options we would like to have. Although it is very tempting, when we look at a car we usually have no qualms about adding things that are really spectacular but that we will use very little. Among the most notable are alloy wheels, which are very eye-catching and impressive, but are among the least practical extras we can find in the new car offers.

Technology is also very appealing and attractive, but it often gives us solutions we don’t really need. Parking assistants, as well as safety features such as cameras and sensors, are very good but have no real practical use at the moment. Yes, these systems help while driving, but they are not necessary. If we don’t add them to the car, the saving will be considerable.

Detailed quote and written offers

Be wary of verbal offers: everything should be in writing and clearly explained. But the biggest saving lies in knowing exactly what you are buying. You should demand a quote listing everything we are going to buy, itemised with the prices broken down. If there is a specific offer, it must appear on the quote and with an expiry date. It is important to know when that quote expires, so that we can complete the purchase on time and the dealership cannot back out. Do not rely on verbal offers, and be suspicious of any promise that is not in writing and bearing the dealership’s stamp.

If we are going to finance the purchase, we need to be clear about all the terms of the agreement, from the total amount of the loan to the costs that will arise. That way we won’t get any nasty surprises when signing and we can insist on what was promised during the negotiations. Above all, information: know what equipment the car has, what these optional extras cost, and how much you can save by going without what you don’t really need.

With these tips, you can visit the different dealerships and look for the car you really need at the price you are looking for.
