An ultralight module for converting an electric van into a camper. Is it what the market needs?

Camper vans are something more than a passing fashion. They are appearing ever more frequently, and there are even companies specialising in them, both in converting existing models and in others that create modules to be fitted to pick-ups. But the market is changing and electric models are arriving. These see their range compromised by the weight of these modules, which add weight and make them consume more.

For this reason, the specialist company EarthCruises is designing a camper module that can be used on electric pick-ups. To make it suitable for the main brands on the market, the manufacturer wants to reduce the total weight of the module. In the case of trucks with combustion engines, this may not be very important, since extra cans of petrol can be carried, but in the case of a battery it is difficult to recharge anywhere.

The company already has several models on the market and claims that the difference between this variant for electric pick-ups and the current ones will be minimal. What matters, according to Lance Gillies, EarthCruiser’s founder, is to ensure that the energy needed to manage this extra weight is the bare minimum required.

EarthCruiser has not wanted to reveal much data about its camper module for trucks, but it claims it will be made of materials that reduce weight without compromising stability and strength. Nor do its plans include reducing the level of comfort of its products. And that level is quite high, since these are quite expensive camper modules.

The brand’s top-of-the-range model has a price of 595,000 euros. This new design will surely be in that price range, as it will be a premium product. To make a reservation, interested buyers will only have to pay a deposit of 100 dollars. The good news is that the makers of this camper module are not only thinking about its use with electric pick-ups, but can also adapt it for use on models with combustion engines. In this way, this motorhome can be enjoyed with any model.

It is not yet known which electric pick-up models it will be compatible with, but it is expected that there will be kits for fitting it to any model. For the time being, EarthCruises is gathering information on orders and the vehicles in which they will be installed, so they will fine-tune the design as much as possible to adapt it to demand.
