Aston Martin will expand the range of versions of the DBX SUV

The brand’s main investor has confirmed that the DBX SUV will expand its line-up with new electrified versions — the stepping stone before an electric DBX?

Aston Martin is going through one of the most critical moments in its recent history.

Alongside the direct consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has led to the loss of up to 500 jobs, the collapse of several projects launched with great fanfare during 2019 by an ever-passionate and enthusiastic Andy Palmer, then CEO of the firm, following his executive ousting in favour of the colder temperament of Tobias Moers, who still heads Mercedes-AMG, has only pushed the Gaydon marque to the edge of the knife.

And, judging by the reception that both the loyal customers of Aston Martin and those generated by the sale of the brand’s first crossover, the Aston Martin DBX, have given, it seems to add variables to an equation whose positive outcome has already been proven and demonstrated by other luxury makers.

Looking sideways is looking

Taking as inspiration, example and history the pioneer of the luxury SUV craze, the Porsche Cayenne, the progressive expansion of a varied catalogue of options, both in bodystyles and engines, given the removal of diesel blocks which led to the first diesel car, now petrol-powered engines are here to stay, from the ‘modest’ 340 CV crossover to the electrified 680 CV beast, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid, will serve as a reference for Aston Martin regarding the new variants of the Aston Martin SUV.

And Lawrence Stroll, a figure who in recent years has taken on various roles in the world of motorsport, both competitive and production, and who is the investor who has taken control of the brand, has been the one to announce that the Aston Martin DBX will receive new versions.

New SUVs, new technologies, new era

To begin with, as expected, the SUV will offer an option as an electrified crossover thanks to an electrical system that allows it to be classified as a hybrid vehicle.

The first of these new Aston Martin SUVs will be the Aston Martin DBX hybrid around 2021, and before the vehicle’s first trip to the operating table, due to the ‘compulsory’ restyling, facelift or mid-cycle refresh that the vast majority of models undergo during their commercial life, it is quite possible that the plug-in hybrid version will be presented; this means that, by late 2021 or early 2022, depending on how the economic context caused by SARS-CoV-2 is reorganised, the presentation of the Aston Martin DBX PHEV will take place.

There is still no confirmation of a fully electric model, as the brand’s management might also decide, perhaps also drawing inspiration from the Porsche Macan, which will adopt a novel configuration as a fully electric SUV.
