Bosch wants to replace sun visors with these smart visors
On the occasion of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the German manufacturer proposes a new solution to improve visibility from inside the cabin
Glare, a sudden change in ambient lighting, or the angle of the sun at sunrise or sunset are usually the reasons why the moment comes to use the sun visor in our cars.
Blocking the light source that strikes and reduces visibility causes an increased risk while driving, due to the limitation of the field of view this comfort element creates once it has been deployed.
From this premise, Bosch’s team of engineers took the starting point to propose a new solution to glare while driving.
The Bosch smart sun visor essentially consists of a transparent LCD screen made up of hexagonal cells, associated with a set of cameras that analyse the activity of the eyes of the person driving.
Based on monitoring the organs of vision, the activation and deactivation of the light filter available in the hexagons darkens a specific area of this smart visor, creating shade only in a particular zone, just the part needed to counter the excess light affecting the eyes.
Once the light has been reduced in this area, the rest of the cells allow the surroundings to be seen, something that is not possible with traditional sun visors, which obscure the partial image visible through the car’s windscreen.
In this video, the development team tells us the story of how they came up with the idea and how they got down to work to create this device, which is designed to improve visibility while driving and, therefore, increase safety on journeys.

Along with the presentation and the inclusion in mass-produced vehicles of virtual mirrors, both interior and exterior, together with new proposals such as this smart sun visor that Bosch is bringing to CES 2020, it is clear that the company is committed to digitising traditional accessories, giving greater importance and weight to technology in order to improve comfort when using the car and increase road safety during journeys.
