Confirmed: the Ford Mustang EcoBoost four-cylinder is now a reality

Ford has confirmed the future arrival of the four-cylinder Mustang, a rumor we had already had the chance to discuss. The most obvious choice would be the engine from the Focus ST.

This news won’t go down well with many fans of the Ford Mustang, but Ford has confirmed today that the EcoBoost engine will make its way into the venerable Mustang, which will get a four-cylinder version, something it had been “fearing” for some time.

Derrick Kuzak made the announcement in an interview, so we can take it as confirmation, since he is the product manager at Ford. The idea is that in the near future we will have a small EcoBoost under the hood of the Mustang when, paradoxically, the Mustang GT500 is already reaching 650 horsepower.

As consolation, the four-cylinder engine will almost certainly have the same vigor as the current V6, since it will feature a turbo and other modifications befitting the lineage it joins. And, venturing a possible candidate for the Mustang, it cannot be any less than the Focus ST engine with almost 250 horsepower.

The closest precedent to the four-cylinder Mustang takes us back to the Mustang SVO, sold from 1984 to 1986, in which as much as 200 horsepower was extracted from the old 2.3-liter engine in its final year of production.
