E.ON will create Europe's largest charging network for electric cars

The Germany-based energy company will develop a charging infrastructure unprecedented in Europe to date.

Just a few days ago, BMW, Daimler, Ford and Volkswagen announced the creation of IONITY, the first pan-European charging network for electric cars. Now, the well-known energy company E.ON has unveiled a similar project aimed at developing a charging infrastructure even larger than that of IONITY. The German company plans to install a total of 10,000 charging points across the whole European continent; to put into perspective the impact this project would have, it is worth mentioning that the IONITY network envisages the installation of 400 charging points.

This ambitious project has been named “Fredoom is Electric”, a name that fits it perfectly since, if it becomes reality, it will reduce the notorious range anxiety that worries so many potential buyers of an electric car.

Apparently the charging points of this network will have a power of 150 kW, which would allow recharging roughly 400 km in just 30 minutes. However, E.ON recognises that battery and charging technology for electric cars will evolve in the coming years, which is why it has confirmed that all its charging stations “could be upgraded in the future to offer a charging power of 350 kW“. Should this last case come to pass, a full recharge of an electric car would be a matter of just a few minutes.

According to E.ON, the installation of the 10,000 charging points will start in 2018 and should be ready by 2020, when all its stations will be operational. The United Kingdom will be one of the countries to receive the most charging points.

The German energy company has taken the announcement of its charging infrastructure as an opportunity to unveil a new electricity tariff aimed specifically at electric vehicles in the United Kingdom. This initiative has been accompanied by a video in which several iconic vehicles appear (Chevrolet Corvette, Volkswagen Beetle, a Monster Truck, etc.), in electric versions. It is worth taking a look at this curious advertising campaign.
