Elon Musk, the billionaire creator of PayPal and founder of Tesla, has revealed more details about his new automated high-speed tunnel network beneath the city of Los Angeles.

The philanthropist’s ambitious Hyperloop tunnels project will come to light next December, based on the latest information obtained on the matter.

The aim of this project is, among other things, to reduce the enormous flow of vehicles that the city of Los Angeles suffers daily, and to shorten the time these journeys take in order to make people’s lives easier.

According to Musk himself, the tunnels will start operating in the coming months. More specifically, through several announcements on Twitter, the project will be inaugurated on 10 December 2018.

From that day on, the company will offer free tickets to study how this novel service works and its feasibility, and to gather information that will ultimately help refine the system.

This project, designed under Elon’s own company, The Boring Company, promises to change the way people move around cities.

The Hyperloop is essentially a system based on rails and capsules that will travel at high speed. It is a service very similar to the metro, but much faster. So much so that the capsules will travel at a speed of 250 km/h between stops, offering enviable comfort.

The alpha phase we are talking about, which will be inaugurated next December, will have a length of 1,800 metres, figures that are far from approximate compared with what is intended for this type of technology in the future.

The most optimistic expectations for this futuristic service put on paper figures as exciting as a top speed of 1,200 km/h for the capsules and a completely automated, non-polluting and autonomous tunnel network that makes people’s daily commutes a brief and comfortable experience.

Only with the passing of time will we see how this technology evolves and whether it ends up becoming what it promises. For now, we simply enjoy initiatives as exciting as these which, if they work, will change the way all of us get around, bringing us ever closer to those sci-fi films we have watched so many times.
