Engine curiosities: Mercedes S 560 SEL estate

Looking at the photo in the post, many of you probably wouldn’t notice the curiosity of this model, but if we dig a little deeper into it and I tell you that Mercedes never built a Mercedes S-Class estate, then you’ll surely understand better where I’m going.

Indeed, the German brand, due to its own product philosophy, and because it offers the E-Class for estate bodies, has never built an Mercedes S-Class estate. However, the one in the photo is an Mercedes S (W126) that was bodied by CARO, a specialist from Hamburg. The final finish of the model is curious, and how well the bodywork has been integrated into an estate.

But already in the 80s, Zender dared to give the Mercedes 560 SEL an estate body. The Zender model featured a rear end with parts from the W123 T in the roof area and parts from the W124 T for the rear. As a curiosity, this model was on sale until 2001, when it was sold for about 5,000 euros.

We leave you with the gallery of both models, the CARO and the Zender.
