From vacuum cleaners to automotive: Dyson prepares an electric car for 2020

The vacuum cleaner manufacturer Dyson is preparing a 100% electric car to unveil next year, 2020, thus entering the automotive market

The race to position oneself in the electric mobility market is not only making the main car brands move quickly. Proposals are coming from all of them: some choose to fully electrify their models, like the “new” brands such as Tesla, while others create hybrid versions of their best-known models. Everyone wants to reach the next decade with interesting offerings to gain ground in this market. But it is not only car brands: other industries have also wanted to get close to these vehicles.

Dyson, the vacuum cleaner manufacturer, has just announced that it is preparing something unprecedented for them: the design of an electric car. And it seems to be quite serious about it, because it wants to have the car ready for launch in 2020, just as the new decade begins, the one that is said to be dominated by electric and hybrid cars.

It is, to say the least, a curious piece of news, since nothing had been said until the company’s approach to the automotive world. Although Dyson has no experience in car design, for several years it has been surrounding itself with professionals from the sector to strengthen a project that looks set to leave us surprised. Among these additions to Dyson’s team are several former employees of Aston Martin and Tesla, who will bring their expertise to Dyson to advance this project. In addition, they have opened several research and development units in Singapore and the United Kingdom.

In these two centres they are working to use all the technologies in their catalogue and, with them, keep advancing so that this future electric car makes a notable difference from the other similar vehicles that will appear in the near future. There is still no information about this 100% electric vehicle, so we cannot know whether it will indeed be a car that is “completely different from anything we know“. The main market for this car will be Asia, although it could also reach Europe and the United States. For now, we will have to wait.
