Good drivers will get an extra point

Being a good driver has its rewards. Not only do you avoid painful and costly fines and prevent accidents, but you also receive a gift, such as the one the DGT will give on July 1. So, if you are one of the 16 million drivers who have not committed an offence since the points system came into force, you should know that you will have one more point on your prized driving licence.

Yes, the DGT has rewarded those drivers who are good citizens and who stay out of trouble, at least when it comes to driving, by giving them one more point so that, out of the 14 points, they will go up to 15. The rest, I’m sorry, will have to wait a couple of years from their last offence to recover the 12 points, unless the offence was serious. If you are in this case, you will have to wait three years.

Only 5 million of the 26 million drivers in our country, which represents 19%, have been sanctioned since the date the licence reform came into force, back in July 2006. For this very reason, road fatalities have been greatly reduced, falling from 2,601 deaths in 2006 to 1,338 last year. According to the Instituto Universitario de Investigación del Automóvil (INSIA), this means that some 50 lives are saved every month.
