Google Maps gets new 3D maps and AI integration to improve driving

Google Maps is evolving into a smarter, more visual and conversational tool, designed to make driving safer, more comfortable and better suited to the real needs of each person.

Google Maps, the popular GPS navigation app from Google, has just received one of the most important updates in its recent history. Two main new features stand out in this renewal: the Immersive Navigation mode and the integration of the Gemini artificial intelligence assistant through the Ask Maps feature.

The Immersive Navigation mode aims to completely transform the driving experience, integrating a new, highly detailed 3D map that accurately represents elements of the real environment, whether buildings, overpasses, pedestrian crossings, lanes, traffic lights or stop signs, among others. Google describes this important improvement to its mapping app as the most significant for driving in more than ten years.

But how has it been possible to reach such a level of detail? you may be wondering. Well, the method used is truly ingenious. According to Google itself, all of this is thanks to Gemini, which has been tasked with carefully analysing thousands upon thousands of real Street View images and aerial photographs to create the realistic rendering shown in the new 3D maps.

On the other hand, and apart from the improvement in visual appearance, navigation in Google Maps incorporates with this update new and genuinely practical features, such as smart zooms or the integration of semi-transparent buildings that allow you to see more of the route ahead, thereby making it easier to prepare before taking a turn or changing lanes.

Likewise, voice guidance now sounds much more natural and human. The app alerts you in real time to incidents on the route and clearly shows the pros and cons of the alternatives: longer journeys without traffic jams, or faster ones that include tolls. Before setting off, you can explore the destination with Street View images and parking suggestions; as you approach, it highlights the building entrance and the correct side of the street.

For the time being, the Immersive Navigation feature of Google Maps is rolling out in the United States to users in that country. However, it is expected to extend to other countries and regions shortly. Similarly, over the coming months it will be available in the Google Maps app for iOS and Android devices, as well as in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and also integrated into all vehicles whose infotainment system is based on Android Automotive, as is the case with vehicles from Volvo, Polestar or Renault, among others.

Ask whatever you like

Finally, the second highlighted improvement in the new Google Maps is the so-called Ask Maps feature, a conversational tool powered by Gemini that allows users to interact with the app naturally. Users can, in this way, ask complex, context-aware questions, instead of having to limit themselves to repeating predefined voice commands, as was the case until recently with this type of system.

Ask Maps is already arriving on Android and iOS phones in the United States and India, and the desktop browser version is also expected to be available shortly.
