Belgian GP: stewards will not let Grosjean race at Monza, Maldonado to drop 10 positions
In our report on the Belgian GP we left several questions hanging in the air, concerning the possible penalties the stewards might impose after reviewing the incidents that occurred after the start. Now we can give you more information, because the FIA has just published a couple of statements in which it imposes penalties on both Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado.
We all thought Romain Grosjean had caused the wreckage that turned Spa’s first corner into a scrapyard, and the stewards have confirmed it. The Frenchman has been found guilty of the accident and also accused of eliminating some of the drivers fighting for the championship and endangering the safety of his fellow competitors, which costs him a one-race suspension and a 50,000 euro fine. As a result, the Lotus driver misses the Italian GP.
Pastor Maldonado was also one of the protagonists of the race start, because he jumped the start and moved off before the light went out. This action costs him five places on the grid, but it is not the only one for the Venezuelan, who received an additional 5 places for taking Glock off the track in the incident that forced him to retire. As a result, the Williams driver’s Monza race is also heavily compromised, having accumulated a 10-place penalty.
What do you think of the penalties? Do you consider them fair? The truth is that Grosjean created a very dangerous situation, and luckily there is no major damage to report, which could have happened if his car, instead of passing in front of Fernando Alonso, had landed on or over another driver, so this seems like a good lesson for him. The penalty for Maldonado is not bad either, since he is accumulating too many incidents in his debut and should calm his enthusiasm a little.
