Here are the new aerodynamic wheels from BMW
BMW has developed new aerodynamic wheels that will improve the efficiency of its upcoming electric models as well as expand the available customisation options
Given the efficiency that all manufacturers are seeking in their latest launches, every detail matters in achieving it. Naturally, the wheels cannot be any different, so they must have a good aerodynamic coefficient so as not to hold back the vehicle’s capabilities. In fact, this element, which we often overlook, can change the figures by up to 30%.
All of this matters even more in electric cars, where every kilometre of range is fought for until the very end. BMW knows this, which is why it has presented the new aerodynamic wheels that will debut on the new BMW iX3, the brand’s next electric launch.
These new wheels are capable of reducing air resistance by 5% compared with the previous ones, fitted for example to the BMW i3 that we recently tested. Not only that, but they are also 15% lighter. These may seem like minor figures, but with this change alone, the brand’s new electric SUV reduces its energy consumption by 2%, meaning it could gain 10 more kilometres of range.
The aerodynamic wheels of BMW will extend to its future electric range
This new aerodynamic wheel design will not only be used on the BMW iX3, but the Munich company will also use them on the BMW iNext and the BMW i4. One of the great advantages of these is that they allow a wide range of designs, so they will remain attractive and buyers will be able to choose between several models. These new wheels can be painted in different colours, and customers can choose between a matt or a polished finish.
The wheels of the BMW iX3 manage to combine lightness in their construction with an elegant design. To achieve this, they feature new precision-moulded inserts placed between the spokes. These have been strategically integrated in that position, as they reduce turbulence in the wheel arch and, therefore, aerodynamic drag.
These new inserts can vary their appearance in countless ways depending on the gloss, the polish and the pattern requested. For example, these can be painted in the same colour as the bodywork, so they blend perfectly with the rest of the set.
With all this, the BMW iX3 will be the first model from the brand to debut these new aerodynamic wheels, components that will improve the efficiency of the whole and expand customisation possibilities. We will have to wait a few months to see them on the launch of the brand’s next electric SUVBMW, but the Munich engineers certainly seem to be working meticulously on every detail.
