It seems that another of the advantages of hybrid vehicles is their weight, in addition to saving fuel and caring for the environment. According to a study carried out by the American IIHS, the additional weight of hybrids helps them be safer in collisions, but also makes them more dangerous in the event of pedestrian impacts.

According to the data the IIHS has reached, a hybrid weighs 10% more than a “normal” car. The extra mass protects occupants more but can also cause more injury in accidents involving pedestrians.

It might seem that an average of 10% extra weight is little, but that percentage makes hybrids 25% safer than their counterparts with conventional powertrains.

And since we were talking about some safety considerations for the new generations of vehicles, the same report again mentions the danger of the absence of sound in electric cars. Most brands have already announced synthesized engine sounds so that the presence of these cars is more noticeable on the streets.
