Hyundai Kona Electric reaches the highest point in Sawula
The Hyundai Kona Electric sets a world record by ‘climbing’ to the 5,731-metre altitude of the Sawula Pass in Tibet
If you were thinking that the Hyundai Kona EV was going to take the record for the car with the longest range on the market, we’re sorry, but that honour belongs to its sibling, the Hyundai Nexo, the hydrogen fuel-cell car capable of travelling up to 666 km on a single refuelling.
But, returning to the record set by the Hyundai Kona Electric, the feat itself is no less striking.
The unit of this electric vehicle, which managed to climb to 5,731 metres, has left behind the 5,715.28 m mark that set the “Highest altitude reached by an electric car” and which now passes to the Korean vehicle
The feat took place at the Sawula Pass, in Tibet, China, and the expedition was orchestrated by a team from Hyundai Motors India, which recorded the achievement that the electric model and the brand have been included in the register of the unique chronicler of feats of every kind, the Guinness World Records.

As can be seen in the video, besides setting the challenge of beating the record for the highest altitude reached by an electric car, the geographical and weather environment were other conditions of the challenge.
Subjecting the members of the expedition and their vehicles to conditions as extreme as those in Tibet increased the difficulty of the attempt.
With very low temperatures, continuous snowfall as the main protagonists, and the hardship, complication and risk involved in driving on snow or on icy asphalt, the support crew and the driver-assistance systems of the Hyundai Kona EV provided an extra layer of safety.
The adventure came to an end when the Hyundai Kona Electric ‘reached the summit’ at the Tibetan Sawula Pass, and the record was officially confirmed by the record adjudicator, who recognised this challenge as a completed feat and established the new mark for the highest altitude an electric car has reached.
