Hyundai launches its first car with a sunroof charging system. This innovation comes after the launch in Korea, but the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2020 will soon arrive in the United States, so the automaker has published more details about the vehicle’s sunroof charging system.

A first for the brand, the roof-mounted panels charge the vehicle’s battery even while driving, thereby preventing battery drain, improving fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions.

In addition, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2020 benefits from additional electric power and driving range thanks to this technology. According to the company, the system, which comes as standard, can charge 30 to 60% of the battery per day, and six hours of daily charging will increase travel distance by 1,300 extra kilometers per year.

When sunlight activates the panel surface, the roof converts it using sunlight photons. This creates electron pairs in the silicon cells, which in turn generate electricity that is then converted to standard voltage by a controller and then stored in the battery.

Heui Won Yang, Senior Vice President and Head of the Body Technology Unit at Hyundai Motor Group, has stated that “the sunroof technology is a good example of how Hyundai Motor is moving to become a provider of clean mobility. The technology allows our customers to actively address the emissions problem. We strive to further extend the application of this technology beyond the eco-vehicle line to vehicles with internal combustion engines.” The Hyundai Motor solar roof charging system makes its debut on the new Sonata Hybrid. The system supports the vehicle’s electrical power source, which improves fuel efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions.

The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2020 is powered by a Smartstream G2.0 GDi HEV four-cylinder coupled to a six-speed hybrid transmission with Active Shift Control technology. The gasoline engine produces 152 CV and 188 Nm of maximum torque, and the electric motor adds another 53 CV and 205 Nm. Hyundai says it currently has no plans to bring the Sonata Hybrid to Europe, where it continues to sell the i40 in saloon and estate body styles.
