Hyundai launches the first LPG hybrid engine, Elantra LPI VHE

Most manufacturers are developing their hybrids based on a petrol engine and an electric motor, but Hyundai has taken a somewhat different path and has presented for the domestic market the first liquefied petroleum gas hybrid vehicle. Liquefied petroleum gas is known to be used by some vehicles in our country, although there is not a wide range available nor sufficient infrastructure.

The Elantra LPI VHE produces 114 CV and features a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, which is paired with an electric motor of 20 CV. The car’s performance is not its strongest point, as it takes 11.7 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h, but its efficiency is its real strength, as they announce an average consumption of 5.6 litres per 100 km (17.8 km/l).

In addition, the Elantra LPI VHE will come with a Start&Stop system and an “Eco” guide that gives us instructions on how to achieve more efficient driving. It also features a more eco-friendly operating mode, which modifies the engine response and energy recovery during braking to be as efficient as possible.

Prices at the exchange rate start from 11,645 euros. For now, however, it will only be available in South Korea and will probably take time to reach Europe, but at least it is a preview of the hybrid technology that will be offered by Hyundai/Kia in the short-term future.
